When did you discover your calling?
I had been aware of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence as a phenomenon even before coming out as queer in the late 1980s. Living in Chicago in the early '90s, I got involved with in-home health care for people with AIDS as a volunteer. The organization was run by nuns attached to Ancilla Home Health Care, a regional Catholic network.

 

I never imagined I'd be a part of the SPI or participate in their work until moving to San Francisco in 1996 and seeing them in action.

Why did you join?
I wanted to devote some of my time and energy to accomplishing something worthwhile within the LGBTQ community. I also felt that as a queer person, it was more fulfilling to "help put the party on rather than simply attend it." The Sisters combined two elements I found irresistible in combination - the accomplishing of good works and vivid public performance.

Major Accomplishments:

• The creation of both the SPI "Laughing Nun" trademark as my Novice Project in 1996.

• The creation of the 25ᵗʰ Anniversary logo image.

• A term as Board and General Membership Secretary, and Co-Archivist with Sister Kitty Catalyst.

Whatever they may be at any given moment, they are small scale, and easy to attain.
